The Twenty Acres: a Scottish flood meadow with a history

Botanists north of the border can only look with a twine of envy at the continuing presence of traditional flowery hay meadows in parts of southern Britain, some of the oldest dating back to medieval times. One reason for the northernmost regions of the United Kingdom is that haymaking from grass came late in Scotland's agrarian history.
